The Naples Airport grounded flights on Wednesday after a plane crashed into a building just before 2 a.m.
Deputies with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene where they said they found four passengers on board of the six-seater, single-engine 36 Bonanza plane.
The aircraft is the same type that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper in the 1950’s in an Iowa cornfield.
Deputies said the plane was leaving the Naples airport airfield around 1 a.m., but didn’t make it far.
The plane clipped a few buildings before it crashed outside the Naples Jet Center. The engine is no longer attached to the plane and one wing is destroyed.
“They clipped a couple of buildings and, basically came to rest outside of the airfield. So the airport is open. there is no damage to the airfield,” Naples Airport Authority Director of Communications R K said.
Pilot R Eardely stumbled upon the wreckage early Wednesday after learning the hard way that his flight lessons are grounded.
Collateral damage, from what the Federal Aviation Administration tells NBC2, was an emergency landing just after the ball dropped.
According to the FAA, the aircraft had engine problems and couldn’t gain altitude.
The FAA said a husband and a wife, and two teenage boys were on board as they were set to fly to Flagler County.
Officials say the plane is a total loss.
