The Ocala Police Department is investigating a crash that left a young man dead early Sunday in Marion County.
According to the Ocala officers, the crash was located at the intersection of SW College Road and SW 17th Street.
OPD said an Audi was traveling westbound on SW State Road 200 attempting to turn left and travel eastbound on SW 17th Street and the same time a motorcyclist who was traveling eastbound on the same road entered the intersection of SW 17th Street.
According to police, the Audi was turning on an unprotected green light while the motorcyclist was traveling through a solid green light.
When the Audi turned into the intersection, the vehicle struck the motorcycle, OPD said.
The 18-year-old motorcyclist from Dunnellon was pronounced dead on-scene. Officers add that he was wearing a helmet.
According to police, the driver of the Audi was transported to the hospital and displayed no signs of impairment.
The entire intersection was closed for several hours after the incident. However, officers announced in a social media post that it has reopened.
“Our condolences go out to the young man’s family and friends as they deal with the tragedy,” OPD said in a statement.
