Police: Belle Isle officer hospitalized after being run over by trailer during traffic stop

A police officer was run over while conducting a traffic stop early Wednesday morning, the Belle Isle Police Department said.

According to police, the officer stopped a vehicle towing a trailer without operable lights around 2:43 a.m. Upon making contact with the driver, officers say they could smell cannabis, which prompted them to ask the driver to leave the car.

Police say the driver refused to exit the vehicle, ignored officers verbal commands and began searching for something inside the vehicle. Then, an altercation broke out between the driver and the officers.

Police say that is when the driver shoved one of the officers to the ground and he was run over by the trailer attached to the vehicle.

The officer was transported to the hospital and is expected to survive, police say.

The driver was arrested, and police say drugs and a gun were located inside his vehicle.
