Police: Florida City mother strikes son with broomstick during argument about pants being too big

A Florida City woman was arrested Tuesday after police said she struck her 16-year-old son with a broomstick, causing a serious injury to his wrist.

According to her arrest report, Shernice Gibbs, 42, got into an argument with her son while he was getting ready for school about his pants being too big.

Florida City police said the argument escalated and Gibbs grabbed a broomstick and struck the teen on his left wrist, causing a deep laceration.

Police said his wrist was “bleeding profusely.”

According to the report, a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crew responded to the home and transported the teen to Homestead Hospital.

Police said Gibbs told officers that she had gotten up early to get her kids ready for school when her son initiated the argument with her about his pants.

According to the report, Gibbs claimed that her son began to use profanity and then punched her multiple times in the face, causing her face to swell up.

Police said she also claimed that she tried to push the teen off her as he wrapped his hands around her neck, and then scratched his face with her nails, causing a small abrasion.

She claimed she then struck him with the broomstick, authorities said.

According to the report, the victim was unable to provide a written statement due to his injury.

Gibbs was arrested on a charges of aggravated child abuse causing great bodily harm.

Local 10 News obtained her mugshot Tuesday, which did not show any signs of bruising or swelling.

She appeared in bond court Tuesday, where she cried before the judge who ordered her to stay away from her son, who is recovering at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

She was granted a $7,500 bond and will be placed on house arrest if she posts bond.

According to the report, the Florida Department of Children and Families was notified about the incident but had not responded to the police department at the time the arrest report was prepared.
