A stolen burgundy Chevrolet Groove struck a line of tall and dense privacy hedges, as two teenagers tried to get away from police officers and failed on Sunday morning in Miami-Dade County.
Attorney Hector Villamar lives where Meridian Avenue is closed between Barry Street and West 39 Street, steps away from the St. Patrick Catholic Church and a private school in Miami Beach.
“We have lived here a long time, and once in a while somebody will come speeding down not recognizing this is a dead end and smash into the dead end,” Villamar said.
According to Officer Michael Vega, a spokesman for the Miami Police Department, the owner of the compact sports utility vehicle reported the armed carjacking was at 2:55 a.m., on Sunday, in Miami’s Model City.
“Units made contact with the victim whose vehicle was taken at gunpoint,” Vega wrote in a statement. “A unit saw the vehicle and began a pursuit.”
The teenage driver sped away from Miami police officers in the stolen SUV at Northwest 45 Street and 14 Avenue and fled eastbound on the Julia Tuttle Causeway and into the jurisdiction of the Miami Beach Police Department.
“The subject bailed out in [the] Miami Beach area,” Vega wrote.
According to Officer Christopher Bess, a spokesman for MBPD, police officers set up a perimeter. Miami Beach police officers joined the Miami police search in Miami Beach’s quiet Bayshore neighborhood.
“All lanes of traffic on 39, 40, and 41 Streets from Garden Ave to Meridian Ave are closed. Please avoid the area,” MBPD announced on X at 6:15 a.m.
Vega reported that police officers arrested the two suspects. The MBPD update on the arrest was at 6:44 a.m. Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
