Port St. Lucie man dies in free-diving incident near Key West, officials say

A man from Port St. Lucie is dead after a free-diving incident in Key West, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says.

The Monroe County Sherriff’s Office posted about the incident on X, formerly known as Twitter, on May 16. Deputies state the incident occurred at 12:30 p.m. when Andrew Wilson Velo, 55, was found unresponsive in the water north of Key West.

Deputies were able to identify Velo on Saturday. The sheriff’s office says next of kin has been notified.

Autopsy results are pending and foul play does not appear to be a factor, deputies say.
