Port St. Lucie man killed in hit-and-run crash was on way to work, family says

Port St. Lucie police on Monday released the name of a moped rider who was killed in a hit-and-run crash late Friday night.

Police said Gardy Petit-Frere, 37, of Port St. Lucie, was riding a moped when he was struck by a GMC pickup truck at approximately 11:15 p.m. at Southwest Airoso Boulevard and Southwest Todd Avenue. The GMC kept going.

Port St. Lucie police believe they have the vehicle involved in the deadly crash. It was recovered about 10 blocks from the scene of the accident.

Port St. Lucie Chief Richard Del Toro says the vehicle was initially parked at the suspect’s residence, before being moved to a neighbor’s driveway the next morning.

While police say they have a suspect, no arrests have been made yet.

Petit-Frere was taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, where he died.

Family members were too shaken to speak on camera, but shared photos of Gardy with WPTV’s Jon Shainman. They said he was the youngest, and kindest, of eight siblings, adding he was a hard worker who was heading to his overnight shift at Fed-Ex when he was hit.

Sadly, today would have been his 37th birthday.
