Victims of Revenge Porn

What is Revenge Porn?

Intentional distribution of non-consensual porn, also known as revenge porn, is a type of harassment that occurs when someone (could be an ex-partner or a hacker) posts sexually explicit images of a person online without their permission.

In some cases, a perpetrator doesn’t even need to be looking for revenge. The dealer of the material need only intend to distribute the sexually audiovisual content (explicit video or photograph) with the int to annoy or harass the victim without their consent.

Revenge porn is a type of abuse that implies the digital distribution of sexually explicit audiovisual content of a person without their consent. It is called “revenge” porn because the images or videos are often used as blackmail material by a current or former partner. Revenge porn is most likely to occur during or after an intimate relationship.

In the state of Florida, the crime of revenge porn is defined as “publishing a sexually explicit image of another person along with personal identifying information of the depicted person to a website without the depicted person’s consent, for no legitimate purpose, and with the intent of causing the depicted person substantial emotional distress.”

Revenge porn is an issue among people of all ages, from children as young as 11, to many older adults.

Why Do People Spread Revenge Porn?

The ambition to “get back” at someone who has hurt you is not unusual. Feeling hurt and misled can cause anger and desire to exact the same type of pain on the person who caused it. Controlling those compulsions can be hard for some, and revenge porn can give what feels like the ability to hurt and embarrass someone.

The developing acceptance of porn in general, plays a part in revenge porn and even the convenience for it to occur in the first place. When it comes to the pain that can be felt during a break-up, the urge to cause pain on the person by exposing them in an intimate way may seem more acceptable to those who make porn viewing a regular habit.
