A reckless driver caused a multi-vehicle crash that caused the South Causeway bridge in New Smyrna Beach to be closed for hours on Monday afternoon, according to a news release.
New Smyrna Beach police said that around 1 p.m., they received reports of the reckless driver in the 7300 block of Turtlemound Road.
A deputy from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office then located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop near 3rd Avenue and South Peninsula Ave, according to the News Smyrna Beach Police Department.
Police said the vehicle sped away at a high rate of speed towards the South Causeway bridge.
According to the release, deputies activated their lights, but lost visual contact with the vehicle as it sped over the bridge.
Police said a short time later, the vehicle crashed on the west side of the bridge near Magnolia Street.
According to the release, at least five vehicles were involved in the crash. Two people, including the driver who fled, were transported to the hospital as trauma alerts.
All lanes have reopened, New Smyrna Beach police said.
