A Florida man is facing serious charges after allegedly shooting and killing another man during a road rage incident.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reports that 26-year-old Kentavious Gholston fatally shot 61-year-old Steven Powers on October 27th. The incident occurred on U.S. Highway 301 and Bloomingdale Avenue after a traffic dispute.
According to reports, Powers and his adult grandson were driving in a work van when they encountered Gholston driving recklessly in a black Mazda. Gholston allegedly cut off Powers, leading to a confrontation that escalated into a shooting.
Witnesses say Powers approached Gholston’s vehicle, and Gholston responded by shooting Powers multiple times. Gholston then allegedly pointed his gun at Powers’ grandson before fleeing the scene.
“He just watched his grandfather get executed,” said Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister.
Gholston was later apprehended after investigators used a debit card he left at the scene to track him down. Surveillance footage and dashcam video also captured the incident and Gholston’s escape.
Gholston reportedly turned himself in and confessed to discarding the firearm in a retention pond. He also provided information about the location of his vehicle.
Gholston faces charges of second-degree murder with a firearm, aggravated assault with a firearm, tampering with physical evidence, and domestic violence battery by strangulation. He is currently being held without bond in the Hillsborough County Jail.
