In Sarasota County’s Laurel Meadows subdivision, there is growing frustration that no one is sending help to the neighborhood after it was flooded by Hurricane Debby.
Wednesday, the only help came from neighbor helping neighbor.
Logan Cox and Nicholas Weppner used a military surplus vehicle, which they purchased for fun, to help evacuate people from flooded homes.
“We just love the community,” Weppner said. “We got to get out there and protect, serve, and do our thing. You know, people should. We are in the United States of America and it’s all about being together as one.”
Throughout the day, they helped people bring items out of their flooded neighborhood.
“We’ve been going back, and we’ve been helping people collect their stuff, like their precious belongings, like photos, any important things, bringing people out, bringing people back in so they can check on their house,” Cox said.
Dave Merigliano lived in the neighborhood and has a foot and a half of water inside of his home.
He’s frustrated, because like many in the community, he believes some of the flooding was caused by a nearby water treatment plant.
“When it was coming into my house, they could have stopped it, we could have got our vehicles out, we could have got our valuables out, but we had no time because it kept coming. We thought it was going to stop,” said Merigliano.
Carol Landsberg is on the neighborhood homeowners association and said she believes new construction of homes in the area has also caused some of the flooding.
“It would also be nice for someone to do an investigation to find out exactly what failed here,” Landsberg said.
She said she and many of her neighbors do not have flood insurance.
“We’ve lived in here, for years,” Landsberg said. “We’ve lived here through hurricanes, much worse than what we had, and water got high, and it flowed out. This flowed and it flowed and it kept building. This is unusual. This has never happened in this way, and so we think there has been a failure somewhere along the line.”
Now the people in the neighborhood are simply wondering when will the water go down.
