Sheriff: Deputy shoots ‘frequent flyer’ following traffic stop near Navarre Whataburger

A 38-year-old man was shot by Santa Rosa County deputies Thursday morning after not obeying commands following a traffic stop, according to Sheriff Bob Johnson.

It happened around 6:25 a.m. near the Whataburger on Navarre Parkway.

Sheriff J says a deputy executed a traffic stop on JDPeacock of Milton, who is a “known gang member” and a “frequent flyer.”

“He was very aggressive during the traffic stop. He would not listen to anything the deputy had to say,” Sheriff J said. “The deputy was trying to de-escalate the situation — it was not working. It was apparent by me watching the body cam that there was something else going on by this individual — probably a drug of some type.

“[The deputy] gets him out of the car and he tells him to get on the ground, but the guy’s refusing and will not do it. Finally he approaches the officer in an aggressive manner, then goes back to the car. The deputy says, ‘don’t get back in the car.’ He leans over to get something out of the car and the deputy shoots the individual in the leg. …The scary part is after he’s shot, it still ends up being basically a foot chase over to the ‘Holley by the Sea’ area, where he’s Tased and tackled and finally taken into custody.”

The sheriff’s office says P sustained non life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.

As per-standard protocol, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the deputy-involved shooting.

Sheriff Johnson says P is originally from Colorado. He had been arrested five previous times in Santa Rosa County since May 2023. Past charges include firearm possession by convicted felon, numerous traffic offenses, dealing in stolen property and drug possession.

“In the last couple of years, he’s spent 238 days in our jail,” Sheriff J said. “And he’s spent a few years in the Department of Corrections in Colorado.”
