A Southport home was heavily damaged when fire broke out early Thursday morning.

Bay County Fire Rescue said shortly after 6:30 a.m. they responded to a home off Highway 2302.

Officials confirmed four people were in the home at the time of the fire along with some pets.

Everyone was able to get out of the home safely, officials said.

Crew are still investigating to find out what caused the blaze, but they have been able to identify where it originated.

“It’s still under investigation. We just know the point of origin was in the back of the home, what we call the Charlie side of the structure. It made its way up the stairs and progressed. The incoming crews made a good stop to keep it from progressing to the rest of the home,” Bay County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Steven Whiters said.

The American Red Cross has been notified and made contact with the homeowners.
