Alcohol and speed are suspected in a fatal crash involving a pickup truck and tractor trailer near Sand Key Park in Clearwater on Sunday morning, police said.
In an update Monday, Clearwater police said Michael D. Jones, 36, of Clearwater was driving a 2007 Ford F-150 north on Gulf Boulevard at a high-rate speed about 1:30 a.m. when he crashed into a tractor trailer that was backing into the driveway of the Sheraton Sand Key Resort, 1160 Gulf Blvd.
The impact of the crash tore the roof off the Ford and the pickup became lodged under the semi truck’s trailer. Jones and his passenger, 41-year-old Mark Harris of Valrico, had to be extricated by fire rescue crews.
Harris died at the scene. Jones was hospitalized and listed in critical condition at Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital in St. Petersburg, police said.
The crash, which remains under investigation, prompted police to close a stretch of Gulf Boulevard for several hours.
