A man was charged with murder after a body was discovered buried in Spring Hill.
Hernando County deputies were tipped off to a possible buried body on September 20 and launched an investigation.
The body of Kevin Walden, a homeless man, was found on a property on Algood Road. Also living on the property was Jeffrey Brehony, 37, who deputies identified as the suspect.
Brehony was living in “some sort of dilapidated structure” on the property and was recently “acting irrational and was paranoid that people were ‘watching’ him,” according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office. A witness told deputies he made suspicious statements about Walden and argued with him.
An argument escalated into a physical fight, which resulted in Walden’s death. He and another man, Duane “Hillbilly” Sanders, 56, buried Walden’s body and attempted to burn their bloody clothing, according to HCSO.
Brehony told deputies that Walden committed suicide with a knife and he tried to help the bleeding man, but he was afraid to call the police. He admitted to asking Sanders to bury the body and giving him the knife, according to HCSO.
Deputies recovered the knife, partially burned duffle bag, Walden’s vehicle and his body. Brehony was charged with second-degree murder and abuse of a dead human. Sanders was charged with accessory after the fact to second-degree murder and abuse of a dead human.
Both men are being held in jail without bond.
