Officials with the St. John’s County Sheriff’s Office (SJCSO) said they responded to multiple 911 calls Monday morning about a male shooting at other motorists out of his vehicle on the interstate.
Officials said the suspect was a male in a red truck who was traveling southbound out of Duval County around 9:30 a.m. Monday.
They said 911 callers reported the man pointing a firearm at passing motorists and firing a few shots.
SJCSO responded to the scene on the southbound lanes of I-95 but the suspect was driving recklessly, they said, and did not stop. He led authorities on a pursuit down the highway, officials said and crashed somewhere just south of State Road 16 in St. John’s County.
Law enforcement said the suspect pointed his gun at several law enforcement officers before he crashed.
Law enforcement said they shut down the southbound lanes of I-95 near mile marker 314 around 11 a.m. Monday.
After the crash, deputies at the scene said they were still concerned about the suspect being armed.
Deputies said they released the K-9s and were able to contact the suspect, who was then airlifted to a local trauma center.
Authorities said in a press conference Monday afternoon that they did not know who or what the suspect was shooting at, or what led the suspect to engage in this behavior.
They also said a civilian vehicle was involved in the crash, but the occupants were evaluated and released at the scene. No citizens or deputies were injured in the incident, SJSCO officials said.
Detectives said they are still actively looking into the suspect and the Florida Highway Patrol is assisting with the crash investigation.
SJSCO officials said charges are pending. This is a developing story that will be updated as we learn more information.
SJSO is investigating to determine what led up to the incident.
Officials said the southbound lanes of I-95 have reopened.
