Suspected drunk driver tased after swerving into oncoming traffic

A Yalaha man was arrested after swerving into oncoming traffic and resisting when officers detained him for a suspected DUI.

An officer observed 60-year-old William Victor Rodman driving south on Beecher Street around 12:32 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. He crossed into the other lane of traffic, forcing a vehicle traveling north to swerve off the road to avoid being struck.

A traffic stop was conducted on Rodman’s vehicle, a silver 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck, near North 14th and High Streets. The officer approached him as he sat in the driver’s seat and asked for his driver’s license, which he had a hard time taking from his wallet. When asked where he came from, he said the Elks Lodge, the report said.

Rodman had slurred speech, glassy and glossy eyes, and a hard time holding his head up as he spoke. He was subsequently asked to get out of the vehicle on suspicion of being under the influence. He was also asked if he would participate in field sobriety exercises, but he said no, the report said.

Rodman was instead read his rights, which he advised that he understood as the officer explained them. When asked if he drank alcohol, he stated he plead the fifth and was not answering any questions, the report said.

The officer placed Rodman under arrest as a result. As he tried to do so, Rodman actively resisted being placed in handcuffs. He was given several warnings to place his hands behind his back. He balled his fists, tensed his arms and snatched his right arm completely away from an assisting officer to grab onto the side of the truck bed, the report said.

Rodman was then tased and escorted to the ground. He was handcuffed and taken to the LPD booking facility where he gave breath samples of .098 and .095, the report said.

Rodman was charged with DUI and resisting (obstructing without violence). He was transported to Lake County Jail and released after posting $4,000 bond.
