Two bicyclists were injured Sunday morning after an SUV crossed Forest Hill Boulevard and entered a lane that had been closed off for a triathlon event near Okeeheelee Park, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. The crash happened at about 8:58 a.m. at Forest Hill Boulevard and Pinehurst Drive.
According to a PBSO Traffic Division log entry, a 2025 Hyundai Tucson was traveling northbound across Forest Hill Boulevard at Pinehurst Drive and was attempting to enter the park when it collided with two westbound bicyclists riding in the outside lane. Investigators said that lane had been closed to vehicular traffic for the triathlon event.
PBSO said the driver did not see the bicyclists, and the cyclists did not see the SUV, a Hyundai Tucson, until the crash was unavoidable. During the collision, both bicyclists struck the passenger side of the vehicle. One cyclist, a 45-year-old woman from Minnesota, suffered serious injuries and the other, a 46-year-old Broward County man, suffered minor injuries, while the SUV driver was listed with minor injuries. Both bicyclists were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Earlier Sunday, Palm Beach County Fire Rescue said crews responded to reports of a vehicle hitting a bicyclist shortly before 9 a.m. The crash prompted a shutdown of Forest Hill Boulevard between Pinehurst Drive and Jog Road, and noted the scene was a short distance from where the Bill Bone Olympic Triathlon was taking place.
The event taking place, the 2nd Annual BillBone Olympic Triathlon, took place from 7-11 a.m. at Okeeheelee Park. The race attracted 368 participants representing 23 U.S. states and eight countries.
The crash remains under investigation.
