An 18-year-old woman riding a moped-style scooter was killed in a crash in Pompano Beach.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office stated that it received a traffic crash report with injuries shortly after 3 a.m. on Monday.
After an investigation, deputies determined that a 2021 Toyota SUV and a 2023 Taiznou scooter were both traveling southbound in the right lane on Southwest 46th Avenue near the Royal Poinciana Condominiums in Pompano Beach.
The report states that the Toyota driver, James Garret, 66, did not see the scooter in front of him and rear-ended it. The victim then fell backward onto the hood of Garrett’s car and was launched when he tried to use the brakes on his SUV.
Pompano Beach Fire Rescue had transported the victim in critical condition to Broward Health North where she was pronounced dead by officials.
Deputies determined that both of the drivers were traveling at the speed limit, neither were impaired and there were no mechanical malfunctions causing the crash.
