The West Palm Beach Police Department (WPBPD) arrested the teen who was allegedly behind the wheel at the time of a December crash that killed a 17-year-old passenger in the car.
Court records show Christopher Granja was booked Wednesday on a count of vehicular homicide as well as driving without a license causing death.
The probable cause affidavit against Granja, 18, notes he admitted to driving the blue Hyundai Sonata shortly after midnight on Monday, December 18, 2023, when the car slammed into a light pole just north of Presidential Golfview Condominiums, on North Congress Avenue, in West Palm Beach.
The impact of the collision toppled the light pole and a 25-foot portion of it came down on the backseat of the sedan, killing Sariyah Robertson. Granja and the person in the front seat were suffered minor injuries in the wreck.
When Granja spoke to investigators, he claimed to be going between 40 and 50 mph at the time they approached the entrance to the condominiums. Granja is reported to have said he saw a truck leaving the complex and swerved to avoid it when he lost control. He said that he closed his eyes and missed the truck before losing control of the car.
The WPBPD investigation, however, revealed the estimated deceleration before the crash and the force of the impact indicated Granja’s car was likely going around 80 mph right before the wreck, which is double the speed limit in that area.
Investigators stated they could find no evidence that supported Granja’s claim about a black truck being in the area right before the crash.
Granja also admitted he did not have a license, according to the affidavit. WPBPD noted that the Sonata had belonged to Robertson’s grandmother. Granja was given the keys because he was the better driver, both Granja and the person in the passenger seat told investigators.
