A teen who was struck by lightning last month in St. Petersburg has died, according to the Pinellas County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Ashley King, 16, died at a hospital from injuries sustained on July 25 when lightning struck a popular banyan tree, officials said. Three other teens were under the tree at the time.
“It had become clear over the past few days that the injuries Ashley suffered were too great to overcome,” the family wrote on their GoFundMe. “Fight as she did, we are deeply saddened to share that our girl couldn’t make it back to be with us, in this life. Every moment of her too short time with us lightened our hearts and made the world feel radiant. Her family and friends will forever hold her memory close and strive to share her passion for life with others in her name.”
The lightning strike happened in the area of 3rd Street and Beach Drive, injuring the four teens, ages 16 and 17.
One of the teens went into cardiac arrest, officials said.
