Lantana has the fourth-highest amount of Brightline crashes out of all South Florida cities after Pompano Beach, Hollywood and Deerfield Beach
Pieces of debris can still be seen where a vehicle and Brightline collided at the intersection of Hypoluxo Road and South Federal Highway in Lantana Tuesday afternoon.
According to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, one person needed to be extricated from their convertible vehicle and Trauma Hawked to a hospital after the collision.
L P said he came running out of his community at Half Moon Bay after hearing the crash while putting up his Christmas lights. He said cars sitting on the tracks is a consistent issue in the area.
“This is a terrible intersection,” P said. “People stop. They get on the tracks. They sit there. They go down and you think you’re never going to get off.”
Data from the Department of Transportation shows Lantana has the fourth-highest amount of Brightline crashes out of all South Florida cities, after Pompano Beach, Hollywood and Deerfield Beach. 7 of the 13 crashes were due to an object stopped on a railroad crossing.
John Lloyd also lives at Half Moon Bay and said he sees people sit on the tracks. He said he’s angry because it stops him from driving around freely.
“Something like this happens and we can’t get out of our residence,” he said. “Something needs to be done about it.”
Brightline has yet to respond to WPTV’s request for comment.
