Traffic Alert: Crash between two semi-trucks in St. Johns County causes hours long closure, Florida Highway Patrol says

All lanes on I-95 North were closed Tuesday evening at County Road 210 in St. Johns County following a crash, according to Florida 511.

Following its investigation, the Florida Highway Patrol said the crash occurred when a white tractor-trailer, which was heading north on I-95 in the middle lane, swerved to the right to avoid a crash and overturned as the driver attempted to re-enter the roadway.

Additionally, a blue semi-truck was behind the white tractor-trailer and struck the rear portion of the trailer.

Neither driver were injured in the crash, FHP said.

The hourslong closure was primarily due to cleaning up leaking cargo coming from the overturned semi.

Florida Department of Transportation cameras showed an overturned semi with an active leak, and backed up traffic.

Around 6:15 p.m., workers began allowing drivers who were stuck in traffic to go through, but the roadway remained closed.

“Units are on scene of an overturned commercial vehicle with an active Carbon Dioxide leak. Hazmat crews are currently mitigating the incident but expect heavy traffic in the area as northbound I-95 is shut down at this time,” St. Johns County Fire Rescue wrote.

Drivers were encouraged to avoid the area if possible and seek alternate routes.

A live look at the highway can be seen in the video player above, which around 7 p.m., shows traffic beginning to move through the area again.
