A truck driver is in the Marion County Jail after causing another wreck on I-75.
29-year-old Calvin Huddleston from Georgia was driving southbound when he crashed his box truck into a guard rail near mile marker 340 Tuesday, just before 6 p.m.
Reports from Florida Highway Patrol say Huddleston was charged for DUI, a suspended license, and a hit-and-run.
Multiple accidents along the highway left North Central Florida drivers in traffic this week. Tuesday morning, another driver steered his tractor trailer into the guard rail near State Road 200 in Ocala.
In Columbia County Wednesday, a semi-truck flipped over near mile marker 410.
Ken Foxx, a driver traveling from northwest Arkansas to Ocala, told TV20 he saw several accidents on I-75 during his journey.
“It was grueling,” said Foxx. “There’s too many people everywhere, so there were too many cars, but if there’s an alternate route I’d probably like to try and find that.”
Florida Highway Patrol troopers encourage drivers to watch their speed, look out for obstructions like fallen items or tires, and pay attention to vehicles pulled over on the shoulder.
Lieutenant Jason French adds no matter how long you’re stuck in traffic, do not leave your vehicle.
“Sometimes we have interstates shut down for quite some time, people get out of their vehicle to see what’s going on. Next thing you know the interstate’s open and you’re three or four cars away from your vehicle and you have to walk back. You’re putting yourself in a huge risk of getting run over,” said French.
Finally, French says the most important thing drivers can do is buckle up and keep their eyes on the road.
“We see people talking, texting, watching videos while they’re driving, putting on their makeup,” he said. “Those things are huge contributor to accidents and they should really be mindful and stop those activities.”
