Two arrested for shooting at Ocala park during youth football game

Two suspects have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a shooting near an Ocala park that injured a man while a youth football game was being played nearby.

On Monday, October 7, the Ocala Police Department arrested 18-year-old Ewonye Jyiell Pinkney and 19-year-old Kayla Marie Jarrell in connection with a shooting incident that occurred at Jervey Gantt Park (2200 SE 36th Avenue) two days earlier.

According to OPD, at around 7:20 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, officers responded to the park in reference to shots being fired. When officers arrived on scene, they found an adult male victim who had sustained “non-life-threatening injuries to his leg” from a gunshot.

At the time of the shooting, a Marion County Youth Football League game was taking place on a field near the parking lot.

OPD launched an investigation, which allegedly revealed that Pinkney was riding in a vehicle being driven by Jarrell at the time of the shooting. The police department stated that while Pinkney was inside the vehicle, he “fired several rounds” towards an individual that was known to him.

The gunshots instead struck an innocent bystander, according to OPD.

No further details were provided by police regarding the shooting incident.

After Pinkney was located by law enforcement, he was placed under arrest and transported to Marion County Jail. He is currently being held without bond, and he is facing the following charges: aggravated battery with a firearm, discharging a firearm from a vehicle in public, possession of a firearm by an adjudicated delinquent, and carrying a concealed firearm.

Jarrell was also arrested and taken to Marion County Jail, where she is currently being held on a $40,000 bond. She is being charged with principal to aggravated battery with a firearm and principal to aggravated assault with a firearm.

On Monday, November 4, Pinkney is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. The following week, both Pinkney and Jarrell have a court date set for 9 a.m. on Tuesday, November 12.
