Two people were killed when their vehicle was hit by a speeding Ford Mustang passing in a No Passing zone.
The driver and a passenger in a 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 had been westbound on County Road 42 approaching Lazy Lake Road in Lake County at about 7 p.m. Friday when their vehicle was struck by a 2015 Ford Mustang traveling eastbound on County Road 42, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol. The Mustang entered into the direct path of the Mitsubishi Mirage G4.
The driver of the Mustang, a 26-year-old Tavares man, had been traveling above the posted speed limit and attempted to pass traffic in a No Passing zone while negotiating a curve, the report said. As a result, the front of the Ford Mustang struck the front of the Mitsubishi Mirage G4. The Mustang then ran off the roadway and entered the tree line.
The Tavares man was airlifted to HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital with serious injuries. The driver, a 46-year-old Paisley man, and passenger, a 56-year-old Paisley woman, of the Mitsubishi Mirage G4 were both pronounced dead at the scene.
This crash shut down traffic in the area during the investigation.
