University of Florida student dies in moped vs. car crash

A University of Florida student riding a moped was killed in a crash involving a car this weekend.

UF officials confirm NH, a student in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, died on Sunday.

Gainesville Police Department officers say the crash happened along Hull Road around 7:30 p.m. Friends tell TV20 that Holland was leaving the Southwest Recreational Gym on her moped.

Officers say a Mustang was headed east on the road and slowed to make a left turn into a parking lot. The car collided with H’s moped, which was headed west.

She was ejected from the moped. Emergency crews took her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Officers say the traffic homicide investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact GPD.

On Monday morning, H’s friends, who didn’t want to be identified, placed flowers at the crash location.

“It made me really sad,” said RM, a UF student. “I know one of the girls that was sitting there and I just saw a bunch of flowers, and it reminded me again how devastating this all is.”

Family and friends say they plan to hold a vigil for H around 7:30 at the gym.

H was attending the university on a U.S. Army ROTC Scholarship. University officials say she aspired to join the Army as an officer after she graduated.

“Our hearts are with N’s family and loved ones during this difficult and painful time,” a UF spokesperson stated. “The safety of the University of Florida community is of our upmost priority.”

Some students using the gym on Monday morning were shocked by the tragedy.

“Really shocking,” said RG, a UF Student. ”I personally find mopeds to be a little dangerous, but I have never heard of anything like this happening. It’s especially shocking because it happened right next to the gym, where students are always doing activities.”

The university is providing counseling services, outreach, and other support for those involved in this incident and those who knew Holland. Students can reach out to U Matter; We Care or the Counseling Wellness Center.

“Life is so fragile, and people are so fragile,” said UF Student Ella Patrick. “I think that the most important thing is we live in a time where it’s really divided, and I think now more than ever it’s really important to hug your loved ones and love your neighbor.”
