Miami Heat forward Haywood Highsmith was involved in a car accident Tuesday night that reportedly left a victim with a partial leg amputation
According to Andy Slater of Fox Sports 640, Highsmith struck a person who was helping another driver stuck in the middle of the road. Highsmith was not with the team for Wednesday’s game against the San Antonio Spurs.
The team announced the crash occurred after Highsmith left Kaseya Center following the Heat’s victory against the Orlando Magic. The Heat did not comment on the severity of the accident.
Highsmith has been a key part of the Heat for the past two seasons. He was in the starting lineup until being replaced Caleb Martin Tuesday against the Magic. A former two-way contract player, Highsmith worked his way up to a rotation spot last season.
He was a key member of the team that advanced to play the Denver Nuggets in last year’s NBA Finals. This year, Highsmith is averaging 5.8 points and 2.8 rebounds.
Tip-off for the Heat vs. Spurs, who are led by top pick Victor Wembanyama, is at 7:30.
