VIDEO: Drunk driver slams into Florida patrol vehicle, seriously injuring two

A drunk driver slammed into the back of a stopped patrol car, sending two men to the hospital and landing the driver in jail, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

On the morning of Dec. 26, Officer Melvin was stopped to help two men change a tire on the Mathews Bridge when A B, 30, slammed his pickup truck into the back of Melvin’s patrol vehicle, causing one of the two motorists to be pinned between two vehicles.

Body camera footage of the incident shows Officer Melvin immediately calling for rescue before running toward the pickup truck to stop it from rolling backward down the bridge.

Melvin opens the door to the pickup to see B slumped over the wheel along with an unconscious passenger in the front seat.

After yelling for B to step on the brakes, Officer Melvin eventually reached in to stop the vehicle himself and put the vehicle into park before returning to help the other injured motorists.

Two men suffered serious injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment while Officer Melvin suffered minor injuries.

B faces six counts of DUI with property damage and/or personal injury, plus charges for driving under the influence, careless driving, and failure to move over for an emergency vehicle.

An investigation is ongoing.
