Villager arrested on DUI charge after crashing golf cart into tree

A Villager has been arrested on a drunk driving charge after crashing his golf cart into a tree.

SDL, 66, of the Village of Hemingway, was found at the scene of the crash shortly before 6 p.m. Friday at Morse Boulevard and Bonita Boulevard, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

A deputy who arrived on the scene found that Lacoss had eyes that were “bloodshot and watery.” He had a “strong odor of alcohol” coming from his breath. He stood up and stumbled from his golf cart to an EMS stretcher which was a few feet away. The Manchester, Conn. native admitted to EMS personnel that he had been drinking alcohol.

The report noted that L had a soft cast on his right wrist from a previous injury. He indicated he suffered the injury when he fell at home.

L attempted to participate in field sobriety exercises, but finally concluded he could not perform the exercises “because he was drunk.”

He was transported to the UF Health Emergency Room Clinic at Brownwood. He had consented to a blood draw and the results are pending, the report said.

L was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence. He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center and released after posting $1,000 bond.
