Alachua County Fire Rescue crews battled a house fire near Waldo Road on Tuesday morning, closing the roadway approaching Gainesville.

Firefighters say a two-story home caught on fire on Kennard Street, near the intersection of Waldo Road (State Road 24) and U.S. Highway 301.

When crews arrived, heavy flames engulfed the home. Due to the blaze, they could not immediately search the home for people inside.

The roadway is shut down headed toward Gainesville. Drivers are asked to avoid the area.

Officials say anyone traveling to Gainesville should take US 301 to State Road 26 in Orange Heights or County Road 225 to the Gainesville Raceway for the next few hours.
