Myrza Rodriguez-Fearnley, a resident of Orlando, Florida, is coming forward and speaking out against an intricate gift card fraud scheme that she fell victim to.
Rodriguez-Fearnley lost thousands of dollars after responding to what she thought was an email from a legitimate money transfer app, buying Target and Walmart gift cards.
Speaking to The Sun, Rodriguez-Fearnley explained that she first received an email containing alarming information about an unauthorized purchase from her PayPal.
The email, adorned with the PayPal logo and containing sensitive personal information, including the last four digits of her social security number, her name, and her PayPal account number, seemed genuine at first glance.
Believing the email to be authentic, Rodriguez-Fearnley reached out to the contact provided, and was informed that her account had been implicated in the purchase of child pornography.
Panicked and desperate to clear her name, she was instructed to purchase gift cards from Target and Walmart as a means of absolving herself of the alleged crime. The scammers, preying on her fear and urgency, convinced her that this was the only way to prove her innocence.
Despite her growing suspicion, Rodriguez-Fearnley complied with the demands, purchasing over $2,000 worth of gift cards as instructed.
However, it was when the scammers requested that she wire money to a Bank of America account that she realized she had fallen victim to a scam. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Rodriguez-Fearnley came to the painful realization that she had been deceived and her money was irretrievably lost.
“That’s when I wake up and (thought), ‘Oh my gosh, this is a scam. These people are stealing my money!'” she said. In total, Rodriguez-Fearnley spent $2,285 on gift cards.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reports that fraud schemes like the one that ensnared Rodriguez-Fearnley cost Americans billions of dollars each year. Scammers often prey on victims’ emotions and manipulate them into taking rash actions, as was the case with Rodriguez-Fearnley.
“I’m very paranoid right now because these people have my information and they made me spend all this money and was so stupid to believe,” Rodriguez-Fearnly said.
“I don’t want this to happen to anyone. Because it’s the worst nightmare that you can ever have.”
