A house fire in Ocala killed one woman Thursday night and neighbors are devastated.

According to Ocala Fire Rescue, firefighters responded to a home in the 2600 Block of Northeast First Avenue just before 11:30 p.m. after a neighbor alerted authorities of flames at the house.

“I heard them as they were moving, a little bit later there was a fire rescue ambulance truck that went by as well,” shared Jeffrey Lyon, a nearby resident.

Firefighters tried to enter the house, but a powerline fell and prevented them from accessing the water supply.

OFR crews were able to get the fire under control, but they found one victim dead after searching the home.

Ocala Police Department officials tell TV20 that the person who died was a 73-year-old woman.

“This is a tight-knit neighborhood,” shared Daniel Septrion, a neighbor. “Everybody in this neighborhood sticks, I mean, they watch each other’s house. Man, I wish I’d have known.”

Septriom and his wife say they always spoke to the woman and she was always friendly to everyone.

“I can’t believe she’s gone. I have seen her every night on my way home from work,” shared Septriom.

People who live nearby say they were up until 3 a.m. due to the sirens and lights.

“They had police cars in the neighbors’ yards and fire trucks all throughout the neighborhood,” shared Septriom.

The house is destroyed but the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
