A strong gust of wind during Sunday night’s storms caused a semi driver to lose control and jackknife his rig on I-295 near Dunn Avenue, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Weather reports from Sunday’s storms showed winds were gusting from 43-52 mph.
According to the FHP report, the 53-year-old semi driver, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured in the harrowing crash.
Troopers said that just after 10:30 p.m. Sunday the man was headed north on I-295 just north of New Kings Road on the Trout River overpass when a strong wind gust caused him to lose control of the tractor-trailer.
The semi veered left while jackknifing and the cab hit the concrete barrier on the left shoulder of the overpass — then veered right, hit the barrier on the right side, and then veered back left and crashed over the left barrier on the overpass, troopers said.
The report said the cab ended up on top of the barrier with the trailer blocking all lanes of I-295 northbound.
It took more than two and a half hours to reopen I-295 northbound.
