A house fire in Perdido Key claimed the life of a woman on Saturday night.
The Perdido Beach Volunteer Fire Department (PBVFD) and several automatic aid departments were dispatched to the scene on Hildreth Drive at 8:19 p.m.
The call was classified as an “Echo” response, indicating the highest level of urgency. Chief Wright, who lives nearby, reported a working fire upon stepping out onto his porch.
Upon arrival, Chief Wright discovered a fully involved house fire with possible entrapment.
PBVFD Engine 3595 quickly deployed a 1 3/4-inch hand line, while personnel from the Elberta Volunteer Fire Department initiated a fire attack and primary search for the resident.
However, extreme fire conditions and structural collapse forced the crew to withdraw from the interior.
The Lillian Volunteer Fire Department established a water supply with tankers from the Perdido Beach and Josephine Volunteer Fire Departments. Additional attack lines were deployed, and a secondary search was conducted as soon as conditions permitted.
Tragically, the woman was found deceased in her bedroom.
The fire was eventually extinguished, and crews remained on the scene until after 2 a.m. to ensure the fire was completely out.
The state fire marshal’s investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing.
