A Sanford woman has been arrested after another woman was found lying in the street with gunshot wounds on Tuesday night, the city’s police department said.
Sanford police responded to a shooting report east of Interstate 4 and Florida 417 just after 7 p.m., where they found Lauren Ashley Martin in the roadway. The 34-year-old was transported to the hospital, where she died, police said.
Savon Chantay Tyler, 35 was arrested in connection with her death.
Police said they determined Martin had driven to Tyler’s home during an ongoing argument.
“Both Lauren and Tyler engaged in a verbal altercation, which then escalated to a physical altercation. During the altercation, Tyler shot Lauren multiple times,” Sanford police said in a news release.
According to the Martin family, the victim was a photographer, and there was some disagreement between the two about pictures Martin took of Tyler.
“Someone went online and made a comment…then another person went online and made a comment just back and forth and spiraled out of control from there,” said Jessica Burks, the victim’s aunt.
According to court records, when Tyler saw Martin at her house, she armed herself with a “… children’s miniature baseball bat…” and a “… 9mm sky handgun.”
In the middle of the street, the two women started beating each other in what police described as a “… mutual-combat style fist fight.”
Police said the incident was live streamed on social media.
Tyler was taken into custody and faces one count of first-degree homicide.
The family of Martin is inconsolable.
“That was my niece, my best friend, my diary. We talked all the time even though we had nothing to talk about,” Burks said. “And I can’t believe this happened like this, we were all friends.”
