Woman in motorized wheelchair hit and killed in SW Ocala crash

A woman in a motorized wheelchair attempting to cross a busy roadway was hit and killed Monday night.

Here’s what we know:

Where was the crash? At Southwest 34th Street and 27th Avenue in Ocala.

Who was killed? A 69-year-old Ocala woman. Her name was not immediately released.

Who was driving the vehicle? A 45-year-old Ocala woman. Her name was not immediately released.

Which agency is investigating? Ocala Police Department.

What time did police get the call? 7:37 p.m. They were on scene at 7:41 p.m.

What happened? Police officials said the 45-year-old woman was driving a GMC Envoy northbound on 27th Avenue in the inside lane. The 69-year-old victim appeared to be in the crosswalk by the intersection of 34th Street.

A witness told police the driver had the green light and the vehicle struck the woman who was in the wheelchair. Officers said when they arrived, the victim was in the roadway.

Medical personnel transported the woman to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, where she later died. Officials said the driver was on her way home at the time of the crash.

Monday’s crash, which is under investigation, occurred less than a mile away from another fatal pedestrian crash that took place on Oct. 1.
