A woman was hospitalized Wednesday after Tampa police said she was attacked by a large pit bull.
Officers with the Tampa Police Department said they responded to a call regarding a dog attack on East Mulberry Drive around 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29.
When police arrived, they said the dog was still actively attacking the woman.
Officers said they tried to use pepper spray to get the pit bull off the woman, but the dog would not release its grip.
One officer then shot the dog to stop the attack, the police department reported.
The woman was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.
Authorities said Hillsborough Animal Control was called to remove the pit bull. Animal Control officers also took in another dog that police said appeared to have been attacked by the pit bull.
No further information was immediately available.
