Woman seriously injured in crash on U.S. 98, car catches fire: Florida Highway Patrol

A woman was seriously injured after a crash on U.S. Highway 98 resulted in a vehicle fire, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers responded to the crash on March 3 at approximately 8:52 a.m. on U.S. Highway 98 (State Road 30) at Gulf Hills Drive, FHP reported Wednesday.

According to incident reports, a sedan-type vehicle driven by a 17-year-old male was traveling westbound in the outside lane of U.S. Highway 98 just east of Gulf Hills Drive.

Another sedan driven by a 41-year-old female was stopped facing west in the outside lane for a traffic control device on U.S. Highway 98 just east of Gulf Hills Drive.

Officials say that the teen’s vehicle was directly behind the woman’s.

Investigations indicate that the teen failed to recognize that the vehicle in front of him had stopped and collided with the back of the vehicle, FHP said. The woman’s vehicle rotated in a clockwise direction and caught on fire, according to reports.

Bystanders broke the window and pulled the woman out of the vehicle before it was engulfed in flames.

The teen had minor injuries from the wreck. The woman sustained serious injuries, according to reports.
