Woman’s arm nearly severed in Brightline train collision in Vero Beach

A woman’s arm was almost completely severed after being struck by a Brightline train along the Treasure Coast on Thursday evening.

The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office (IRCSO) said the pedestrian was severely injured after being struck by a Brightline train at the 12th Street railroad crossing in Vero Beach at around 6:04 p.m.

IRCSO said deputies quickly responded to the scene — between U.S. Highway 1 and Old Dixie Highway — and applied a tourniquet to the woman’s nearly severed arm.

The sheriff’s office said the woman, who was walking on or near the tracks, is being flown to a trauma center for further treatment.

Authorities, including deputies and railroad officials, are currently investigating the cause of the crash. No roadway closures have been reported at this time.

This Brightline collision comes a few weeks after a Delray Beach Fire Rescue fire truck and Brightline train collided into each other injuring 15 people.
