Wrong-way collision in Port St. Lucie leaves woman dead, toddler with serious injuries

Port St. Lucie police are investigating a wrong-way crash that resulted in serious injuries to a 3-year-old and the death of a woman.

The Port St. Lucie Police Department (PSLPD) stated that on Sunday they responded to Northeast St. James Drive and Charleston Oaks Drive at around 7:05 p.m.

Through their investigation officers determined that a Kia Soul was driving south on the northbound lanes of Northeast St. James Drive when a Toyota Camry was driving north on the same road.

Officials stated that the cars collided head-on near the intersection of Northeast Charleston Oaks Drive.

According to the report, a 3-year-old passenger of the Toyota was not in a car seat, but was using a seatbelt sustained serious injuries, and was airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital.

A 40-year-old passenger who was sitting in the back of the Toyota in the middle seat, not wearing a seatbelt, was transported to Lanwood Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead.

The Kia Soul driver was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials stated.

PSLPD is still investigating the crash, however, they stated that impairment or speed were not factors in the crash.
