Wrong-way driver dies when car flies off Selmon expressway in downtown Tampa.

30-year-old Tampa man died Wednesday morning when his car flew over a concrete barrier along the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway onto a downtown Tampa intersection, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The man was driving the wrong way, east on the expressway’s westbound lanes, when he crashed around 2:10 a.m. He was trying to exit the expressway on the entrance ramp at Tampa Street when his 2014 Chevrolet Sonic flipped over a concrete barrier.

The man died at the scene. He was wearing a seatbelt.

The Selmon Expressway has elevated lanes that run through downtown Tampa. Wednesday morning’s crash happened above the intersection of Brorein Street and Franklin Street, where the car landed.

The crash closed lanes of Franklin Street and Brorein Street between Tampa Street and Florida Avenue.

Why the man was driving the wrong way on the expressway was unknown, troopers said.

The Highway Patrol did not release his name.
