One person is dead following a head-on collision caused by a wrong-way driver who may have been impaired, Florida Highway Patrol said.

At 1:21 a.m. on New Year’s Day, troopers said a 32-year-old Groveland man in a pickup truck was traveling south in the northbound lanes of US-41.

At the same time, a 17-year-old Brooksville girl in a Dodge Ram was traveling north in the northbound lanes of US-41, carrying a 44-year-old man, a 45-year-old woman, and a 15-year-old boy.

Just north of Sgt. Lea Mills Boulevard, the two vehicles collided head-on, FHP said.

The 44-year-old man in the Dodge died at the scene of the crash. The teen driver and the other two passengers were taken to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Troopers said it is unknown as to why the Groveland man began traveling in the wrong direction, but alcohol impairment is suspected.
