Four units were destroyed in a fire at an apartment complex on Jacksonville’s Southside Sunday morning, according to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.

According to JFRD, a dog died in the fire and another one is unaccounted for.

JFRD said around 9:30 a.m., they received a call about a fire at the Bentley Green Apartments on Princeton Square Boulevard East off Baymeadows.

“This is not a way that a lot of fathers want to spend their Father’s Day,” JFRD Capt. Eric Prosswimmer said. “We’re sorry for the family that lost their dog. We did everything we could. We tried to save it, but it wasn’t in the cards today.”

No other injuries were reported.

The Red Cross is helping 24 people who were impacted by the fire. Twelve of those people are adults and the other 12 are children, according to JFRD.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
