12-year-old girl escapes Cape Coral home fire with 4 dogs

A 12-year-old girl saved her four dogs from a smoke-filled home in Cape Coral.

“I am grateful my grandbabies made it out, and the dogs are alive,” said Connie Callahan, the girl’s grandmother.

Callahan explained that her granddaughter and the family’s four dogs were inside their home on SW 7th Place, just off Skyline Boulevard, when smoke began to fill the house.

“She said she smelled smoke, and the dog we call Big Mama started pouncing on her, and the ceiling already started coming in,” Callahan said.

The incident occurred around 8 a.m.

The girl’s mother, who was watching from work through a connected camera, guided her daughter out of the smoke-filled home.

“My daughter, via camera from work, had to talk her through to go out of the house because it was pitch black inside,” Callahan said.

Tar is scattered throughout the house, and even hours after the fire, the smell of smoke is so strong that it’s difficult to stay inside for too long.

“The fire department made us evacuate, too, because of the smoke inside,” said Casey Bernard, the neighbor who shares the duplex.

The young girl is now being treated at Golisano Children’s Hospital and is expected to be OK.

Unfortunately, the family lost everything inside the home due to smoke or water damage.

According to the Cape Coral Fire Department, the fire originated from a TV in the garage that was plugged into an extension cord.
