A 15-year-old boy was behind the wheel of a truck involved in a crash that killed a woman in her 60s, police say.

In a Wednesday night update, the West Palm Beach Police Department identified the woman killed as 68-year-old Maureen Wheeler. Police say at around 11:51 a.m. Wheeler was driving a 2008 Lexus LS460 at the intersection of southbound Village Boulevard and Shenandoah Drive.

Detectives were able to determine that the 15-year-old boy was driving the pickup truck alone when Wheeler in the Lexus was attempting to make a left turn from Shenandoah Drive onto Village Boulevard. Police say the pickup truck struck the driver’s side of the Lexus, causing it to rotate counterclockwise, facing northbound in the southbound lane.

Police say the pickup truck came to a rest with the front tire in the fog line, and the rest of the truck tires on the grass and sidewalk.

Wheeler was pronounced dead at the scene and the 15-year-old boy was taken to the Palm Beach Children’s Hospital at St. Mary’s Trauma Center for minor injuries.

A photo from the scene shows both vehicles sustained significant damage.

Investigators believe speed was a contributing factor in the crash and criminal charges are possible and pending the investigation.

No further details were disclosed by police.
