16-year-old girl shot in altercation outside Fort Pierce community center

A teenage girl was injured Saturday night in a Fort Pierce shooting that started with a fight outside a community center, according to police.

In a statement, the Fort Pierce Police Department explained officers were called shortly after 8 p.m. to an intersection outside the Lincoln Park Community Center, on Avenue M, after receiving a report of gunfire in the area.

According to its statement, investigators determined there was a fight outside the center prior to the shooting. The police department did not indicate how many people were involved in the confrontation, or what caused it.

During the altercation, a 16-year-old girl was shot, and she was taken by first responders to the hospital, where she has since been treated and released, the report stated.

The police department did not release any details about a possible suspect or whether someone was taken into custody. It said the investigation is still ongoing and asked anyone with information to call police at 772-828-0285 or to email kramirez@fppd.org.
