Two motorcyclists, on separate bikes, were left hospitalized after they both lost control of their vehicles at a Lake Wales intersection and were ejected from their vehicles, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Just after 1 a.m. on New Year’s Day, deputies said a 30-year-old Haines City man riding a 2023 Kawasaki motorcycle was traveling east on Tindel Camp Road, approaching the intersection with Lake Mabel Loop Road.

The driver, for an unknown reason, lost control of his bike and overturned, sliding roughly 100 yards in the eastbound lane.

At the same time, a 25-year-old Winter Haven man on a 2024 Suzuki bike was also traveling east on Tindel Camp, at an unknown distance behind the other motorcyclist. Officials said this driver appeared to have swerved, to avoid crashing into the Kawasaki.

The swerve caused the Winter Haven man to also lose control of his motorcycle and overturn.

Deputies said both drivers were ejected from their bikes and were not wearing helmets. However, it does not appear that the two bikes collided.

The driver of the Kawasaki suffered significant head injuries, while the driver of the Suzuki’s injuries were not disclosed. Both were taken to nearby hospitals.

According to the sheriff’s office, the Suzuki driver was able to speak with authorities but only gave them minimal information.

The roads were shut down for about four hours.

This remains an ongoing investigation.
