A 24-year-old man died Monday following an apparent industrial accident that police are investigating, according to Port St. Lucie Police.

Police and the St. Lucie County Fire District about 11 a.m. Monday went to the incident on Southwest Becker Road between Southwest Village Parkway and Range Line Road.

The area, which is west of Interstate 95, is under construction and not open to the public, said Sgt. Dominick Mesiti, police spokesperson.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that an adult male was performing maintenance in an underground drainage pipe when he was suddenly pushed out of the pipe from below ground, through the opened roadway grate, and came to rest on the roadway,” police stated.

The man, identified as Austin Falcon-Rodriguez, 24, of Port St. Lucie, received “severe head injuries,” Mesiti said.

He said there’s no indication Falcon-Rodriguez, who died at the scene, was hit by a vehicle.
