50 acre fire burns through field, destroys equipment in Chiefland

Chiefland Fire Rescue leaders say a fire quickly spread from five acres to 50 acres in a field Monday.

They were notified about a large fire near NW 60th Street before 2:30 p.m. Alongside them, five other agencies responded and contained the fire around 3:30 p.m.

Fanning Springs Fire, Bronson Fire, Cedar Key Fire, Levy County Department of Public Safety, and the Florida Forest Service were also on the scene.

“The ability for different agencies to come together and work as one and accomplish a mission in such a quick time, that says a lot for our community. It shows that we are dedicated for the safety of our community and the citizens therein,” said Lieutenant Kevin Davis with Chiefland Fire Rescue.

Leaders with the Florida Forest Service say the fire was caused by someone conducting an unauthorized burn in the area, but dry conditions caused it to spread.

“Our department, along with multiple other departments, we come out and we start trying to get ahead of the fire and protect structures and any other viable buildings that could be in danger and when a forester gets on scene they do their part,” said Davis.

300 rolls of hay were burned, along with a tractor and heavy equipment. Two sheds were damaged, but no houses or barns were caught in the flames.

No injuries were reported.
